The Obelisk now stands at the very edge of crumbling cliffs that marks the boundary between the land and the Southern Ocean. It is a symbol of Robe's history, but also a beloved icon for locals, visitors, and tourists. I spent my childhood summers in Robe, and every time I return I feel it may be my last glimpse of the historic monument. In every sense, the Obelisk is liminal. It balances on the border of land and water, of the ocean and Guichen Bay, and of past and present. In my photograph, the Edge of the Night, I wanted to capture and share a different perspective of this stunning coastline and its vulnerable landmark. The stars were very bright that night, and shooting at a high ISO (3200) and a relatively fast shutter speed (20 seconds) allowed me to freeze the stars and capture the night as I saw it; the beam of the lighthouse painted in the sandstone shoreline and the red and white edifice of the Obelisk. My photograph shows the Obelisk perched on the edge of space and time, at the edge of the sea and the edge of the night.
